People will bid adieu to monarchy: Thapa
In what appears to be a clear departure from his earlier pro-monarchy
statements, former prime minister and president of Rastriya Janashakti
Party (RJP) Surya Bahadur Thapa has said that after the Constituent
Assembly election, the people themselves would formally bid farewell to
the institution forever.
Thapa, who's party believes that some form of monarchy is necessary for
the country and who himself is known to have a soft-side for monarchy as
he had served as the country's prime minister during King Gyanendra's
royal regime also, said this when asked whether it was true that the King
has personally appealed to him to do something to save the institution of
monarchy in a press meet organized by the party in his home district
Dhankuta on Monday. He is currently touring the
district to campaign for the upcoming election.
Saying that he had personally advised the king against thrusting despotism
upon the people, Thapa revealed that he had told the king well before he
seized power that if he is to do so then the people would themselves bid
adieu to the institution of monarchy.
"But because of his (king Gyanendra's) unrelenting character now the
people are bidding him a farewell," Thapa said. nepalnews.com ag Mar 25 08
