Maoist cadre killed in police firing in Solukhumbu

A Maoist cadre was killed when police opened fire during a scuffle between the members of Nepali Congress-affiliated Tarun Dal and the Maoists in Solukhumbu district on Wednesday.

A statement issued by the Information Bureau of the Maoist party said that Ganga Bahadur Bhujel 'Gajendra', a member of the district secretariat, died on the spot in the police firing.

The clash occurred at Gora VDC of the district when the cadres of Tarun Dal confronted with the Maoist cadres, who were constructing the stage for a mass meeting.

Several others are reported to have sustained injuries.

Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who is currently visiting the eastern region, has reached Solukhumbu to get first hand information.

The situation in the area remains tense with the Maoists staging angry demonstrations following the incident. The party has claimed that NC leader Bal Bahadur K.C was behind the incident.

According to the CPN-M Information Bureau, an indefinite strike has been called in the district from Thursday to protest the killing. nepalnews.com ia Mar 26 08
