Village students get laptops
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Nepal has in coordination with Ministry of
Education distributed laptops to the students of Janajyoti Lower Secondary
School in Ugratara-8 Kavre district on Thursday as part of first ever
pilot distribution of the laptop in Nepal.
The inexpensive but highly durable OLPC XO laptops were distributed to all
16 students of grade four of the school amidst a programme.
The officials from Department of Education, Nepal Government were also
present in the distribution ceremony.
According to OLPC, the XO laptops contain free and open source soft-wares
specifically designed to aid children in learning activities.
Along with the laptop, the school also received a School Server which
contains extra books and contents that can be accessed on the laptop
through wireless connection. The School Server also acts as a hub for
internet connection that can be shared among the laptops.
The community-based not-for-profit organisation said it is extending this
programme to other schools too very soon. nepalnews.com ag Mar 28 08
