Women leaders regret lack of enough women candidates

Women political leaders, Sunday, expressed sadness that the political parties failed to keep their promise as far as fielding enough women leaders in the election is concerned.

Chairperson of Inter-party Women Network, Uma Adhikari, speaking at a programme organised by the network in the capital Sunday, Mar 30 08. nepalnews.com/ANA

"In the proportional system, they have fielded around 23 percent women candidates while in first-past-the-post system, less than 10 percent women are in the fray. This is in contrast to their commitment to at least ensure 33 percent representation of women in the Constituent Assembly," said Uma Adhikary, central member of Nepali Congress and president of Inter Party Women's Alliance (IPWA).

"And in places where they been given tickets, they have been fielded in weak constituencies and against strong leaders," Adhikary said.

The IPWA comprising women MPs from various parties has appealed to the people to cast votes for women candidates wherever they are in the fray.

"The CA must have adequate women representation for it to be meaningful," said Sita Poudel, general secretary of IPWA and leader of UML. nepalnews.com sd Mar 30 08
