NC, UML 'committed' to declare republic from first CA meeting
Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) Tuesday discussed the procedures of the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, which is set to abolish monarchy and turn the country into a republic.
According to NC vice-president and peace minister Ram Chandra Poudel who led the NC team in the meeting held at UML headquarters, Balkhu, the two parties have agreed to implement republic from the first CA meeting. They also agreed to call a seven-party meeting to forge understanding on the agendas of the first CA meeting and other issues.
The meeting also dwelled on issues like formation of a government of consensus, and amendment in the interim constitution to remove the provision of two-thirds majority to remove the Prime Minister.
The two parties are also learnt to have discussed the model of the presidential system, but there was no understanding as such on the issue.
Amrit Bohara, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Agni Kharel represented the UML in the meeting while Poudel's team included Amod Prasad Upadhyaya and Radheshyam Adhikari. nepalnews.com mk May 20 08
