CA to turn Nepal into republic today
The historic first meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) is all set to implement the declaration of republic on Wednesday.
The meeting will begin at around 11 am.
Decks have been cleared for its initial agenda of implementing the republic after the meeting of all the 25 parties represented in the CA agreed to set up the position of ‘constitutional president.’
The parties have directed the cabinet to move appropriate resolution in this regard during the CA meeting.
Earlier, the three big parties – Nepali Congress (NC), Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) and Maoists – had agreed to have constitutional president and executive prime minister.
The three parties, however, are yet to finalise the nitty-gritty of the new arrangement.
At the meeting today, the Prime Minister will introduce the resolution to implement republic declaration after the CA approves its interim procedural regulations. The government will also make necessary changes in the constitution to implement the declaration.
The King will be provided with fifteen to thirty days to vacate the Narayanhity royal palace, which will then be turned into a national museum. nepalnews.com sd May 28 08
