The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) started, Wednesday, more than ten hours later than the scheduled time.

The meeting started at quarter past nine in the evening at the Birendra International Convention Center (BICC) in New Baneshwore.

The eldest member of CA, and senior leader of Nepali Congress (NC) Kul Bahadur Gurung chaired the meeting.

The CA meeting is set to endorse a proposal of federal democratic republic shortly.

Addressing the CA assembly, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said this is the one day in an era which brings about transformation in the life of a nation.

"This is the day when my dream has been fulfilled," the PM said.

"You have a great responsibility on your shoulders, responsibility of writing a constitution and responsibility towards martyrs," he said.

PM Koirala also urged for continued cooperation, understanding and unity among all.

Later, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel read out PM Koirala's written statement.

"The CA has come as fulfillment of six-decade-long aspirations of the people to write their constitution themselves," reads his statement.

The statement adds that the peace process is nearing the logical conclusion. "(Now), the monarchy is going to be ended. I believe the people's sovereignty will now be safe," he stated.

The statement adds that the CA will prepare a plural democratic framework ensuring inclusion of all community, groups and classes. nepalnews.com sd May 28 08
