Govt writes letter to ex-King to vacate palace

The government today sent a letter to sacked King Gyanendra to vacate the Narayanhiti palace within the 15-day deadline given by the Constituent Assembly (CA), which declared the country a federal democratic republic on Wednesday.

Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situala told reporters that the letter has already reached to the former King.

A cabinet meeting yesterday had decided to write a letter to the ex-king, notifying him about the declaration of republic as well as the order of the Assembly to vacate the palace.

The Home Minister, who is scheduled to go Narayanhiti on an inspection visit tomorrow, also revealed that Gyanendra had not left Narayanhiti.

Some media reports said Gyanendra and his family members had left the palace late last night. TV reports showed a fleet of vehicles leaving Narayanhiti at 12:45 am, but it looked like the vehicles carried only the belongings of the Shah family.

The government plans to turn the sprawling palace into a national museum. nepalnews.com mk May 30 08
