NC not to join special panel unless ToR reviewed

Nepali Congress has decided not to be part of the army integration special committee unless it is reconstituted and Terms of Reference (ToR) set by the government is reviewed at par with past agreement.

An informal meeting of the top NC leaders held at the residence of party president Girija Prasad Koirala Tuesday morning demanded revision of the TOR and involvement of other parties in the committee.

After the meeting, party spokesperson Arjun Nar Singh KC told reporters the government has not defined clearly what it meant by 'major parties' that will be deciding the army integration issue. The earlier agreement regarding army integration committee states the committee will consist of representatives from major parties in the constituent assembly.

NC is demanding inclusion of members from Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) and TMLP has threatened to disrupt the parliamentary proceedings if it is not given chance to be member of the committee.

On Monday, CPN (UML) and CPN (Maoist) had agreed to revise the TOR of the committee and include NC in the committee. Accordingly, the UML leaders are holding talks with NC today. nepalnews.com ia Nov 04 08
