Govt to remove royal statues from capital city

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam has said the government will remove all the statues of the ex-kings and other former royals from Kathmandu to be replaced by public heroes.

Speaking at Ratnapark, Kathmandu Saturday while laying foundation stone for construction of the statue of Sankhadhar Sakhwa, who founded Nepal Sambat, Gautam said the replacement would be done following consensus with political parties.

He said the statues of former kings and other royals would be kept in museum for preservation.

He also urged the Kathmandu residents to suggest the names of eminent figures whose statues could be erected in place of the former royals.

He further sought assistance from locals in building Kathmandu a peaceful, environment friendly and beautiful city as envisioned by the new government. nepalnews.com ia Nov 15 08
