Kathmandu gets new Kumari
Kathmandu will get its new three-year-old living goddess Kumari today as Matina Shakya will take her seat at Kumari Ghar, Hanuman Dhoka.
She will succeed Preeti Shakya, who is 11-years old. A four-member committee comprising priests of Taleju and Kumari Ghar selected her for the esteemed position.
Kumaris are replaced by new ones on the onset of menstrual cycle of the reigning Kumari. Preeti was chosen as Kumari in 2001.
Bhaktapur had installed its new Kumari, Shreeya Bajracharya last month after eight months of vacancy.
The tradition of appointing Kumari by royal priest has ended with the end of monarchy this year. nepalnews.com ia Oct 07 08
