NC talks tough; asks Maoists to walk the talk

Even as Prime Minister and Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been saying that he is close to roping in the opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) into the government, senior leaders of NC have asked the Maoists to fully implement the past agreements.

"From the 12-point agreement to the latest seven-point agreement, they have not implemented any of the agreements," NC vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel said, and warned of ‘revolt’ if the Maoists continued to violate past agreements and understandings.

Speaking at the special session of the Constituent Assembly (CA) held in its capacity of the legislative parliament, Poudel, who is also a CA member, said that although the Maoist government is in place the ordinary people are still suffering at their hands.

Poudel, who has stepped up anti-Maoist rhetoric lately, referred to the Maoists failure to return seized lands and properties, and what he called as continued militarisation of its youth wing, the Young Communist League (YCL) and so on as indications of their non-abiding by past pacts.

Similarly, speaking at the same session, NC leader and CA member Dr Ram Sharan Mahat also took the opportunity to get even with CPN (Maoist), claiming that the budget presented by the Maoist government was “politically inspired”.

The former finance minister said if the budget programme is not implemented by immediately forming an all-party committee there are chances of the budget being misused.

By cutting down programmes being run in the districts from a long time, he said, the Maoist government is only trying to halt the development process.

In response to remarks by NC leaders, Maoist CA member Jhakku Prasad Subedi challenged Nepali Congress to launch a revolt if it wanted to.

“If it has people’s support it can do so from the CA itself,” Subedi said. nepalnews.com sd/ag Oct 19 08
