Service tax will not be borne by guardians: Education Minister

Even as the Inland Revenue Department has said that the educational service tax of five percent introduced by the new budget will have to be borne by the parents, Minister for Education Renu Yadav has claimed that it will not.

“The department has come forth with its views without full understanding,” she said.

She hinted that the additional tax to be levied on private schools will have to be borne by the private school operators.

The issue of additional tax has kicked off controversy. The Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON) has asked the government to withdraw the tax.

“Not all private schools are financially well-off. Only five percent of the 8500 private schools are well-off. The government says that education is a fundament right and it also imposes taxes on this sector like it does on entertainment sector. This is grossly unfair,” said Tukaram Dhakal, general secretary of PABSON. nepalnews.com sd Oct 21 08
