SC judge stresses on implementation of law against human trafficking

Supreme Court justice Kalyan Shrestha has said that despite relatively strong and progressive law regarding human trafficking in Nepal, many victims have not received justice due to weak implementation.

Speaking at a seminar organised by Maiti Nepal on the second National Day against Human Trafficking on Saturday, he also stressed the need to respect the law of the land on the part of people by changing their attitude.

"Our law is progressive as recognises even the clients, besides traffickers, as criminals which is not found in the laws of other countries," Shrestha clarified.

He spoke on the need to broaden the areas of existing law as the human trafficking is not limited to just trafficking of women and children for forced prostitution. "Both men and women are being trafficked for organ transplant and forced labour as well," he added.

During the programme, the lawmakers had vowed to work for making strong law against the human trafficking. They also stressed on the need for eradication of poverty, end to violence against women and awareness to prevent the vulnerable groups from being trafficked.

According to statistics of Maiti Nepal, an NGO working against human trafficking, about 7,000 women and children are trafficked for forced prostitution from Nepal. nepalnews.com ps Sept 6 08
