Load shedding hours to be increased to 35 hrs a week

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is increasing the load shedding hours substantially beginning Tuesday.

According to a report in Kantipur daily, due to closure of some units of Kulekhani and Marsyangdi projects, the current level of 17.5 hours a week of load shedding is set to increase between 25 and 35 hours a week.

The closure of the two units will cause loss of 53 MW to the NEA system whereas 60 MW being imported from India has already been stalled as electric poles were damaged by recent flooding in eastern Nepal.

Last year, the NEA has imposed 42 hours a week of load shedding during peak dry season.

This year, the hours of load shedding have already reached to worse level at the monsoon season.

One of the major worries is the lack of water collection at Kulekhani reservoir during this monsoon – which could have a crippling effect during upcoming winter and dry season. nepalnews.com sd Sep 09 08
