Flood toll climbs to 45 in far-western districts
Floods and landslides triggered by incessant downpour continue unabated in far western region, pushing the death toll to 45 in the last three days.
More than two dozen flood related deaths were reported in Kaliali district. Twenty-five Village Development Committees (VDCs) have also inundated due to flood in Mohana River of the district. Similarly, 10 people have been killed in Kanchanpur, six in Doti and one each in Bajhang, Dadeldurha and Darchula district. Over 35 people are still said to be missing in these districts, reports said.
Earlier reports said Kailali district headquarters Dhangadhi has been completely inundated and tens of thousands of local people there have fled homes to save their lives. More than a dozen VDCs in Bardiya district have also been inundated.
Reports said over tens of thousands people in Kailali and Kanchanpur are still waiting to be rescued as large-scale rescue efforts have not started yet.
The district administration of Kailali launched rescue operations in the affected areas from today. Reports said nearly 100 people were moved to safe places by army helicopters today. Nepal Army, police and local organisations are involved in rescue efforts. nepalnews.com Sep 22 08
