Minister Poudel says it's possible to generate 10,000 MW in 10 yrs
Minister for Water Resources Bishnu Poudel has claimed that Nepal can generate more hydropower than the 10-year target of 10,000 MW.
Speaking at Reporters Club Wednesday, Poudel said investment proposals from foreign investors have increased after the government revised the hydropower policy and that the 10,000 MW target is achievable.
According to the revised policy, companies producing less than 3 MW power will not need to apply for license from the government while those generating less than 50 MW need not produce evaluation report on environmental impacts. According to the minister, the policy will come in handy in increasing the national investment as well.
Minister Poudel also clarified that government would give equal importance to companies from India and China and provide license whichever side comes up with the best bid.
"Hydropower will be the base for success of government's aim to bring about economic revolution in the country," he said adding he was encouraged by the enthusiasm and interest expressed by investors during the power summit. nepalnews.com ia Sep 24 08
