UML to allow adjourned House to resume

After cold-shouldering Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s repeated calls for support to resume the disrupted winter session of the House, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal on Wednesday assured that “a way out” will soon be found to recommence the stalled parliamentary business at the earliest.

“UML is not in favor of disrupting parliamentary business for a long time,” Khanal clarified at a press meet organized by Kaski district chapter of Press Chautari in Pokhara.

Accusing the Maoists of providing party protection to the person behind the murder of his party’s activist Prachanda Thaiba in Butwal and stating this was the reason the murderer has not been caught till now, he said UML is “closely watching” whether the Maoist-led government is indeed serious towards its commitment to bring the guilty under the purview of the law.

UML has charged Maoist’s Rupandehi district chairman Sujit BK with the murder of Youth Force leader Thaiba. The third largest party in the Constituent Assembly and junior coalition partner in the Maoist led government has been boycotting the Cabinet and has disrupted the House session demanding that the guilty be brought to book. The central secretariat meeting of the Unified CPN (Maoist) held Wednesday morning has already decided to terminate party membership of Sujit BK with immediate effect.

At the programme, Khanal also stressed on the need for a national government with Nepali Congress (NC) in it, arguing that the Constituent Assembly election gave a clear mandate for “consensus and cooperation” among all the political parties.

He further said that UML has not committed any mistake while in the government “and so will not pull out of the government".

“But the Unified CPN (Maoist) that leads the government has continued to engage in murder and hostilities,” he said, warning that if the Maoists don’t correct their ways, “they will fall into serious trouble".

The Prime Minister also caused unnecessary controversy by ordering that the People’s Liberation Army members be allowed to participate in the ongoing 5th National Games, he said.

Speaking at an election mass meet at Morang on Tuesday, Khanal had said the Maoists had failed to govern the country and that peace has not been restored in the country due to Maoist arrogance.

“The new constitution won’t be drafted in people’s favor by operators of catapults and guns,” the UML chief said. nepalnews.com ag Apr 08 09
