CA by-election conducted at six constituencies

The by-election for the Constituent Assembly (CA) held in six constituencies Friday was mostly peaceful except some minor glitches.

Despite being held amidst tight security, there was a clash between CPN-UML and Nepali Congress (NC) cadres in Dhanusha constituency-5 today afternoon.

According to reports, the clash occurred after the UML cadres accused police personnel deployed in the area for polls security of supporting the NC candidate Chandra Mohan Yadav, who is son of president Dr Ram Baran Yadav.

The CA by-election was conducted at six vacant constituencies: Morang – 5 and 7, Dhanusha – 5, Kaski – 1, Rolpa – 2 and Kanchanpur – 4. The government announced public holiday in these districts today.

Five of these constituencies became up for grabs as the candidates winning the CA election from there had to give them up after winning other constituencies also. On the other hand, Dr Ram Baran Yadav gave up Dhanusha-5 after he was elected the first President of republic Nepal.

The Election Commission (EC) said altogether 4,44,353 people cast their votes in 490 poll centers of 6 constituencies today. With citizen certificate in hand, they had lined up at their respective polling centers to cast vote since 8 am this morning. The voting concluded at 5 pm this evening.

EC said results will start coming within three hours after voting process completes.

Meanwhile, the Constituent Assembly (CA) by-elections in several stations in two districts were delayed due to technical problems that occurred in Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). After new machines were delivered to the centers through helicopters from Kathmandu, voting process again resumed.

Similarly, some disturbances were seen in nine polling centers of Kaski constituency-1 and 11 centers in Dhanusha constituency – 5. nepalnews.com ag Apr 10 09
