Writ filed against fee hike; price of text books also hiked
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed at the Supreme Court
challenging the private schools' unilateral decision to hike monthly fees
from the new academic session.
Advocates Daya Ram Upreti and Narayan Jha jointly filed the PIL challenging
the decision.
Publishers have also hiked the price of text books used by the private
schools following the fee hike by the schools, reports say. The price of the
text books have been hiked by up to 68 percent.
Meanwhile, general secretary of Private and Boarding Schools' Organisation,
Nepal TR Dhakal has said it had not issued circulars to hike fees to all
schools as reported in the media, but only to those schools which were
facing closure due to a severe shortage of funds after taking approval from
the Education offices.
Education minister Renu Kumari Yadav has said it is not right on part of the
private schools-which had vehemently opposed the government's decision to
impose a five percent education service tax- to impose an additional 25
percent fee to the parents.
Likewise, Nepal Guardians Association has appealed parents not to pay the
increased fee. nepalnews.com Apr 16 09
