NC to organize nation-wide stir against Maoist high-handedness

Concluding that the ruling Unified CPN (Maoist) has continued to interefere in various sectors of the country and engage in all kinds of atrocities, the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to organize nationwide protests against such moves.

A Central Working Committee meeting of the party held at its central office in Sanepa Tuesday reached a decision to this effect reasoning that the Maoists were trying to humiliate Nepal Army by relieving Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal from his post.

The main opposition party also accused the Maoists of interefering similarly in the judiciary, bureaucracy, press including various other sectors under various guises to impose "communist totalitarianism" in the country.

Talking to the media after the meeting, NC spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said that if the Maoists go ahead with its plan to sack Army chief Katawal despite so much opposition then NC will, in association with other political parties, announce nationwide stir against the decision.

He said that the party also decided not to join the government until the Maoists and the government it leads corrects its actions, adding that the protest programs will soon be publicized.

Meanwhile, various sister organizations of the Maoist party organized protest rally to pressurize the government to sack the Army chief today evening.

Thousands of people participated in the protest rallies that converged to Ratna Park from areas like Baneshwor, Kalimati among others, bringing traffic in many areas of Kathmandu to a halt. nepalnews.com Apr 28 09
