Seven major parties agree to form local bodies
Seven major political parties have agreed in principal to form local bodies based on proportional system of votes. The agreement was reached at the meeting of the task force including the ruling five parties and two opposition parties organised at the Ministry of Local Development (MoLD) on Tuesday.
Minister for MoLD and convenor of the task force Ram Chadra Jha said after the meeting that the parties would submit their proposals about how the seats would be distributed and which party would lead in various districts in Thursday's meeting.
The agreement was reached after CPN (Maoists) showed flexibility in its stance of forming the local bodies through direct election and proportional system of votes.
While following the proportional system of votes Maoists will get the leadership of 23 districts, Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) will get 16 each, Forum will get 5 and Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party (TMLP), RPP and CPN (ML) will get 2 districts each.
The leadership in the remaining districts will be given to other small parties which have secured at least 1% vote in the constituent assembly. The details will be discussed in the next meeting of the task force scheduled for Thursday.
"There has been an agreement to discuss (the details) in the party and submit to the task force," said Nepali Congress leader Prakash Saran Mahat. nepalnews.com Feb 04 09
