UML organises mass meeting; leaders vow to consolidate party's position

Following the modus operandi of a typical political programme in Nepal, leaders of CPN (UML) condemned other parties and blew their own trumpet at a mass gathering in the capital on Friday.

Accusing the ruling partner CPN (Maoist) of being extreme leftist and anarchic and main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) of being status-quoist, senior leaders of the party said UML would be the major political party after its upcoming general convention.

Addressing the mass gathering organised on the eve of its General Convention, party General Secretary Jhala Nath Khanal said, "The nation is in need of a good leader, and UML will provide such leader after the general convention." UML General Convention is slated to take place from February 16 to 21 in western Nepal town of Butawal.

"We will bury all the extreme leftists and anarchists in a pit," he thundered.

Former General Secretary of the party and chairman of the Constitution Committee Madhav Kumar Nepal stressed on the need for cooperation between all political parties for a good constitution. "Constitution writing and peace building process will be stalled if the parties don't cooperate," he said.

Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam - who went to Khula Manch straight from the airport upon his return from Bangkok where he had gone for health treatment – waxed eloquent on what he called as the improvement in the law and order situation of the country, which he said was only because UML is in the government. He said there is a guarantee that the new constitution will be written on time only because UML is in the Constituent Assembly.

Senior leaders KP Oli, Sahana Pradhan and leaders of various sister organisations of the party also expressed their views at the gathering. Youth leaders called for solidarity within the party at the general convention.

The mass gathering was attended by thousands of party cadres who had gathered in Khula Manch after rallying around the city. nepalnews.com ta Feb 06 09
