Govt might extend VDIS deadline: Dr Bhattarai

Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, who returned to the capital on Wednesday after competing his week-long visit to Japan, said that the government might consider extending the deadline of Voluntary Declaration of Income Scheme (VDIS), which ends today.

While speaking to journalists upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Minister Bhattarai said the government would take a 'concrete decision' regarding the extension of VDIS deadline after consulting with the businessmen and entrepreneurs.

He also made it a point to relate that his ministry would also take necessary steps to confirm whether the prospective general taxpayers are facing any technical hassles to pay tax under the programme.

Representatives of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) and Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) also today urged prime minister Puspa Kamal Dahal to extend then timeframe of VDIS.

The businessmen and industrialists have been clamouring for the extension of the timeframe of the VDIS till April 11. They are also demanding that procedural complications of the VDIS should be simplified.

The government aims to rake in Rs 1 billion through the VDIS.

The Income Tax Act allows the government to charge defaulters penalty up to 100 percent apart from seizing their property. nepalnews.com nd Feb 10 09
