Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said the students of private schools failing to pay service tax to the government would not be allowed to take the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations this year.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Lamjung Mahotsav in Besi Shahar on Sunday, minister Bhattarai urged all private schools to pay the five percent service tax announced by the government through its budget speech in September last year.

Dr. Bhattarai said the government would now present itself very strongly to enforce its directives. He announced that the government plans to spend the amount collected from the service tax for education of students of remote parts of the country.

The private school owners have been opposing the service tax saying that it would add burden to the students. nepalnews.com ta Feb 16 09
