Five supplementary papers tabled in the closed door session of UML
Various leaders have tabled five supplementary papers in addition to earstwhile General Secretary Jhala Nath Khanal's political paper and Amrit Kumar Bohara's statute amendment proposal on the second day of the closed door session at the general convention of CPN (UML), in Butawal.
Organising a press conference after Wednesday's closed door session, party leader Ishwor Pokhrel told journalists that youth leaders Ghanashyam Bhusal, Shankar Pokhrel and Guru Baral tabled the supplementary papers and Dr. Pushpa K.C. tabled a note of dissent on federalism.
Earlier, Khanal and Bohara had tabled the political paper and statute amendment proposal respectively soon after the beginning of the closed door session on Wednesday.
The delegates have been divided into 20 different groups for discussion. Each group will discuss on the tabled proposals till noon tomorrow and the leader of each group will present the conclusions before the closed door session after that.
The party statute proposed by leader Bohara calls for a multi-post leadership. According to the proposition, the central committee members will be elected by the delegates of the general convention. Whether the party leadership (chairman, vice-chairman and general secretary) will be elected directly by the delegates or by the central committee would be decided in this general convention.
Party leader Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, who has also expressed his intention to vie for the post of chairman, has said there should be direct election of the chairman from the delegates of the convention.
Talking to journalists this morning, Oli said that efforts were underway to select the leadership through consensus. In what he termed as 'UML's unofficial response to the press', he said he was confident that the party would give him suitable responsibility.
Immediate past general secretary Khanal and former general secretary Nepal have also expressed their intention to become the chairman. nepalnews.com ta Feb 18 09
