Leaders file nominations at UML general convention

Various leaders have filed their nominations at the general convention of CPN (UML) in Butwal.

Jhala Nath Khanal, KP Sharma Oli and Subodh Raj Pyakurel have filed their nominations for the post of chairman; Bharat Mohan Adhikary, Amrit Bohara, Bam Dev Gautam, Sahana Pradhan, Bhim Rawal and Ashok Rai have filed nominations for the post of vice-chairman.

Likewise, Pradip Nepal and Ishwar Pokhrel have filed nominations for the post of general secretary; Shankar Pokhrel, Bishnu Poudel, Surendra Pande, Yub Raj Gyawali, Rajendra Shrestha and Raghubir Mahaseth have filed nominations for the post of secretaries.

Almost 300 leaders have filed their nominations for over 100 posts of central committee members. Two candidates- Lalit Kumar Basnet and Chuda Mani Jungali-have been elected unopposed as central committee members. Basnet was elected from the reserved quota for peasants.

The party statute endorsed yesterday has provisions for a chairman, three vice-chairmen, a general secretary, three secretaries and a senior leader. All but the senior leader will be elected directly by the delegates at the general convention. The senior leader will be nominated by the central committee.

The candidates for central committee members can withdraw their nominations by 9 pm tonight. But the nominations for office holders at the central committee can be withdrawn by tomorrow morning.

Party workers are still pressurising the leaders to come to a consensus, at least for the top post.

The voting will take place between 9 – 10 am tomorrow and the counting of votes will begin at 11 am. nepalnews.com ta Feb 21 09
