Govt will not let tax evaders go scot-free: Dr Bhattarai

Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday said that the government would not spare those who have evaded tax.

Dr Bhattarai issued the warning to this effect while speaking at an interaction program on Voluntary Declaration of Income Scheme (VDIS) held at the Finance Ministry.

Emphatically stating that not all investments made in various sectors would be exempted from the VDIS, Dr Bhattarai also said, "The government will, nevertheless, exhibit flexibility towards the investments made in productive sector.”

Dr Bhattarai also revealed that very few professional organisations and professionals had filed tax returns under the program.

Representatives of the private sector, however, said that no new investment will be made in any sector if the government continues to threaten entrepreneurs under the VDIS.

They also stressed on the need to address the deficit of trust between the government and the private sector.

The business community has been opposing the government policy requiring the source of income to be declared under the VDIS. nepalnews.com Feb 25 09
