Oli camp emerges stronger in UML CC

Although CPN (UML) leader Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli lost the race for party chairman, his supporters have emerged stronger in the central committee (CC).

Out of 115 CC members elected, about 61 are Oli supporters while only about 41 are Khanal supporters. Thirteen of them maintain a neutral stance. Two vice-chairmen and two secretaries are Oli supporters.

With the completion of vote counting, the UML general convention concluded in Butwal on Wednesday, four days after the slated date.

The election committee announced the results of the remaining seats in the CC and administered oath of office and secrecy to the elected members.

Former general secretary of the party Madhav Kumar Nepal secured the highest number of votes (1416) as the CC member. Oli and Bharat Mohan Adhikari – who was defeated in the contest for vice-chairmen – received the second and third highest votes respectively. All candidates who were defeated in the contest for key positions secured their seats in the CC.

The CC comprises of eight office holders, 39 members from open contest, 16 from zonal reservations and 52 members from reservations including women, ethnic communities, Muslims, peasants, remote areas, the Terai and dalit. Of this 30 are alternate members.

In addition to the CC members, the delegates at the convention also elected a 16-member Discipline Commission and a 15-member Audit Commission. nepalnews.com ta Feb 26 09
