Govt to give retirement to 13,000 civil servants
In an attempt to downsize the civil service, the cabinet has endorsed the
proposal of the Ministry of General Administration to give voluntary
retirement to as many as 13,181 civil servants.
A cabinet meeting held at Singh Durbar on Friday decided to give voluntary
retirement to civil servants who were promoted one notch automatically
under the provisions of the new Civil Service Act last year.
According to the decision, civil servants who have either completed 50
years of age or served for 20 years in civil service are allowed to take
voluntary retirement with a bulk pay equivalent to their salary of seven
years if they choose to.
The government has decided not to recruit new staff in positions that fall
vacant after the retirement. The decision will cost an extra Rs. 1 billion
to the government coffer.
According to the provisions in the existing Public Service Act, civil
servants can serve till they are 58 years old or complete 30 years of
service.
The cabinet meeting on Friday also decided to form a high level commission
led by CA member Nandan Kumar Thapaliya to recommend suggestions for the
management of Koshi flood victims. Koshi flood victims have been
protesting with an 8-point charter of demands since a long time. nepalnews.com Feb 28 09
