Wage dispute continues to cripple jute mills
All eight jute mills based in the Morang-Sunsari Corridor continued to
remain shut for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday. The regular
operation of these mills has been obstructed due to the protest of workers
who are demanding government fixed minimum wage.
The government had set the minimum daily wage at Rs 190. However, the mill
owners have refused to abide by the increased rate.
According to them, they are not in position to pay their workers at the
rate of Rs
190 per day. Moreover, they are bemoaning that without the provision of
discounts on
electricity their products also cannot compete in the Indian markets. nepalnews.com Jan 1 09
