Agitating workers close Jogbani border
In order to press their demands, workers affiliated to Biratnagar Jute Mill on Sunday closed the Jogbani border, according to media reports.
The demands raised by the workers include regular operation of the industries, payment of minimum wages fixed by the government and a reduction in power cuts.
It is learnt that some 3,000 mill workers staged a protest at the main gate at Jogbani thus blocking imports and exports.
The mill has been closed for two months and the labourers have not been paid for the last four months. The border closure also affected daily lives in Biratnagar.
The agitating workers have said that the lethargic attitude on the part of the concerned government bodies toward their grievances compelled them to obstruct this Nepal-India border.
All eight jute mills in the industrial corridor of Biratnagar have been crippled since last week due to the ceaseless protests unleashed by the related workers. nepalnews.com Jan 4 09
