Landslides claim six lives in Kaski and Mugu
At least six people have died and two more have gone missing in separate
land-slide related incidents in various parts of the country caused by
incessant rainfall from the past few days.
Three members of a family died when a house was swept away by a mud-slide at
Deurali VDC-8, Kaski district.
The deceased have been identified as Mangali Gurung, 80, Soni Gurung, 25 and
one and a-half-year old Purnima Gurung, according to Kaski district police.
Rekha Gurung, 11, who was swept away along with the house, was rescued from
the banks of a nearby river.
Another two members of the house, Sim Bahadur Gurung and his wife, were not
in the house when the tragedy struck and are reported to be safe.
There was a heavy rainfall all day Wednesday in the area, which probably
caused the mudslides at 3 am Thursday morning. A huge log had also tumbled
along the mudslide, destroying the Gurung family's house on the way.
In another report, three minors died after being buried inside their home
after a mudslide swept it away in remote Mugu district Wednesday night.
The deceased have been identified as Ram Bahadur Budha, Nar Bahadur Budha
and Ratna Budha of Shera VDC. Their age has not been verified but reports
quoted local police as saying that the three brothers were in their teens.
Similarly, two people have gone missing after a landslide swept away a house
belonging to one Krishna Bahadur Bhujel of Dhapade VDC-5, Tanahun
district.
Police said the missing are Bhujel's wife and daughter. Both are feared
dead.
Meanwhile, reports coming in from Rautahat say that 14 houses in Bairganiya
VDC-5 have been completely submerged after flooding in the Aruwa river.
The families of Jayakaran Sah, Thaga Baitha and Joshi Raya Yadav including
11 others have been displaced after their houses were completely submerged
when the floodwaters entered their village settlement.
Reports said the displaced families are currently taking shelter in the
neighboring village.
Although the late monsoon allayed worries about impending drought with rise
in temperature and was welcomed all over the country, the possibility
of heavy thundershowers in most parts of the Terai and mid-hills regions in
the coming days has raised fears of more land-slide related incidents
and deaths which has become a norm during this season every year. nepalnews.com July 02 09
