Girija calls for consensus, statue within timeframe
Former prime minister and president of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala repeated his calls for politics of consensus and end of all hostilities to pave way for completing the task of writing the constitution in time.
Speaking to reporters and party cadres in Biratnagar Thursday, Koirala said this is not the time to topple or change governments but to concentrate on the mandated task. He even challenged the Maoist leadership to pull down the current UML-led coalition government.
He further underlined need for unity among all political forces until the country gets a new constitution, which he said should be completed on the time despite several obstacles.
He added the new constitution must ensure institutionalisation of democracy, which has been achieved through a great sacrifice by the Nepali people.
The octogenarian leader opined that neighbouring India and China should also extend support for timely drafting of constitution.
Expressing concern over the increasing number of ethnic organisations and politics based on ethnic lines, Koirala ruled out the possibility of federalism based on ethnicity. nepalnews.com ia Jul 02 09
