Gongabu locals demonstrate against ‘child abduction’

Local residents of Gongabu, Kathmandu have staged demonstrations, obstructed traffic and shut down shops in the area protesting against the alleged abduction attempt of a child, Monday.

The locals have accused three people of trying to abduct Manoj Pradhan, a student of Deepjyoti School. The locals had detained Dawa Sherpa, 40, of Solukhumbu and beaten up Sunday accusing him of trying to abduct Pradhan. Two others fled from the scene, locals said.

Sherpa is undergoing treatment in critical condition in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. Locals have accused the police of not acting efficiently to arrest the accused abductors.

Brief clashes occurred between the police and the locals in the course of the demonstrations. Earlier, six policemen were injured in the clashes Sunday evening.

Police have said they would investigate on the matter as the accused is in their custody once the latter recovers. nepalnews.com
