Tuesday's mob killings spark protests; traffic on Arniko highway blocked for hours
Koteshwor, Thimi and Kaushaltar areas remained tense for several hours since early morning Wednesday due to protests organised by the kin and fellow students of the two teenagers beaten to death on accusation of abduction in Dhunchopakaha, Thimi, yesterday.
Clashes occurred at Pepsicola and Koteshwar areas between the police and the protesters. Three protesters and five policemen including Deputy Superintendent Biswo Raj Pokharel and Assistant Sub-Inspector Dipendra Chand sustained injuries in the clashes. Police resorted to baton-charging to disperse the protesters.
Vehicular movement in these areas and the Araniko Highway was halted while shops were closed for hours due to the protests.
The relatives and students of Adarsha Janapremi Higher Secondary Schoolgheraoed the Koteshwar police post demanding action against those involved in Tuesday's incident.
The situation in Koteshwor and Thimi areas returned to normal in the afternoon due to heavy presence of the police. Vehicular movement along the Arniko highway has now resumed.
One of the deceased, Sabin Mahat Chhetri, was a grade XII student at Adarsha Janapremi. The other deceased Jiban Thapa Magar was a student at King's Academy.
The locals had ruthlessly beaten the two teenagers and two others at Dhunchopakha yesterday wrongly alleging them of trying to abduct a child from Himchuli Boarding School. Two others were critically injured and are undergoing treatment at B & B Hospital, Satdobato.
Police said the teenagers were involved in a gang fight and were running away when a group of local people started beating them in Dhunchopakha on accusation of child abduction. nepalnews.com
