Khyati murder-accused remanded to judicial custody
Kathmandu district court Friday granted permission to the police to detain Biren Shrestha and Merina Shakya, the accused in Khyati Shrestha's murder, for further investigation.
After the initial hearing today, the court remanded them to custody as demanded by the police.
After the court decision, Biren Shrestha has been sent to central jail and Shakya to the women's jail in Sundhara.
Earlier, friends and relatives of Khyati had demonstrated outside the court demanding strongest action against the accused. Police said Biren has already admitted he killed Khyati.
There was heavy presence of security personnel considering the protest of relatives of the slain girl.
Police had filed a case at the district court on Thursday seeking maximum sentence to the accused and Rs 10 million compensation to the victim's family.
Biren Shrestha, a former schoolteacher, had taken Rs 1 million ransom from the Shrestha family. He was arrested on June 16.
In the charge-sheet, police said Biren killed her with an iron rod at his residence in Khusibu, Kathmandu, after giving her sedative drug on June 05. Merina assisted him in the girl's kidnapping and subsequent murder.
Police had recovered Khyati's mutilated body parts from different places in Kathmandu and Chitwan. nepalnews.com
