Streets wore a deserted look with vehicles off the road and the marketplaces closed. People were seen walking to their offices. Some private offices and all education institutions are closed. Unlike earlier bandhs, shops in inner areas of the capital city also remained closed.

Only ambulances, vehicles of security agencies and some motorcycles marked press were seen on the streets.

The struggle committee, an umbrella organsation of all the Newars including different political parties, called the strike in 12 districts in and around Kathmandu valley demanding an autonomous state and annulment of Urban Development Bill.

Small groups of demonstrators were seen at various places across the valley with their flags and chanting slogans for an autonomous Newar state. Some Maoist leaders including Hisila Yami were seen leading the rallies.

The bandh organisers vandalised some vehicles for 'defying' the bandh call. They have not even allowed cyclists on the road. They were seen deflating the tires of bicycles.

They also attacked media vehicles including that of Image Channel, Nepal Television, Nagarik Dainik and Kantipur F.M at different places.

However, in spite of severe impact of the bandh, no major incidences of violence occurred. nepalnews.com ta June 01 09
