Lawmakers inspecting disputed border areas in Dang, Banke

A team of lawmakers that is currently on a fact-finding mission in Dang to inspect the border with India and ascertain the validity of reports of encroachment of Nepali territory by India and harassment of Nepalis living there visited few disputed border points including Koilabas and Kusum in Dang district Monday, according to reports

The team of Constituent Assembly's National Interest Protection Committee led by Amik Sherchan also held interactions with local political leaders and civil society representatives on the border issues in Lamahi.

The team which includes CA members from 18 political parties including border experts, rights activists, journalists and members of civil society in the CA is scheduled to visit 22 border points in Dang and Banke districts.

They are to prepare a detailed report on the issue after completing their field-study in the district

Meanwhile, the members of the International Relations and Human Rights led by its chairman Padma Lal Bishwokarma also reached Dang yesterday to inspect the disputed border area.

On Sunday, 18-political parties represented in the CA met in Singha Durbar, under the initiation of the Unified CPN (Maoist), the main opposition and the largest party in the CA, and decided to inspect the disputed border area after reports of border encroachment became public.

Meanwhile on Monday, the Supreme Court had issued a show-cause notice to the government asking why it had failed to stop "Indian ncroachment" of Nepali territory along the Nepal-India border.

Advocates Santosh Basnet and Pushpa Thapaliya had on Sunday filed a public interest litigation claiming there had been Indian encroachment and demanded court intervention to make the government reclaim more than 60,000 hectares of Nepali territory encroached upon by India in 22 districts adjoining the Indian border. nepalnews.com June 09 09
