Constitution must reflect public expectations: Prez Yadav
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Thursday said the new constitution that is
being drafted should mirror the aspirations of the public, adding that the
challenge is to come up with one which the people can cherish and feel as
their own.
Speaking at the inaugural of 11th National Convention of All Nepal Legal
Professionals that kicked off in the capital, President Yadav said that
the new constitution should adhere to the principles of rule of law and
assure press freedom "or else it won't be durable and will fail to
maintain lasting peace in the country".
He also stressed on the need to incorporate the expectations of the people
from the mountains, hill and Terai-Madhesh in the new constitution, while
asserting that the existence of Nepali depends on the existence of Nepal.
Stating that the nation has expected much contribution from legal
professionals to draft a democratic and inclusive constitution, Dr Yadav
said that the Constituent Assembly and Nepalese people as a whole should
be able to face any kind of obstructions that might hinder the timely
drafting of the constitution.
Thousands of legal experts and representatives from within the country and
abroad are attending the three-day convention that will conclude on
Saturday by issuing a Kathmandu Declaration.
Nepal Bar Association, which organises the event every three years, said
that the slogan for this year's convention is "Nepal Bar's Campaign for
Drafting of Democratic Constitution". nepalnews.com ag Mar 05 09
