Govt, Tharus sit for yet another round of talks
Having remained inconclusive despite concerted efforts, the talks between
the government and the agitating Tharu and indigenous community again
started in the capital city on Wednesday.
The two sides are currently discussing the decision that was taken during
the seven-party meeting that took place in Singha Durbar earlier today.
In the meeting the seven parties had decided to fulfill all the demands of
indigenous Tharu community by amending the recently promulgated ordinance
in which the government has placed Tharu and other indigenous community in
Terai under the Madhesi category.
The ordinance has been totally disapproved by the Tharu community, leading
them to organise strong protests against it across many parts of eastern
Terai. The strike that started ten days ago has already claimed three
lives and has badly crippled normal life in Terai.
In the talks the government team is headed by Peace Minister Janardan
Sharma while Raj Kumar Lekhi of Tharu Welfare Council including other
Tharu activists are representing the Tharu community.
Talks between the government and the agitating Tharus on Tuesday remained
inconclusive after the government talk team said that it needed some more
time to discuss the demands put forth by the agitating Tharu community. nepalnews.com ag Mar 11 09
