During a meeting with the office-bearers of National Human Rights
Commission (NHRC) Thursday, Pillay said the failure on the part of
Nepalese authorities to implement the recommendations of NHRC and Office
of the High Commissioner for Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal) on a number of cases of
human rights violations shows the culture of impunity in growing in Nepal.
On the occasion, the UN rights chief also assured of necessary help to
improve the human rights situation in Nepal and enhance the capability of
NHRC and civil society.
Meanwhile, Pillay held separate meetings with Constituent Assembly
chairman Subas Nemwang and Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav today and
discussed issues concerning human rights and formation of a commission on
involuntary disappearances, among others.
Pillay, who arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday, is also scheduled to meet
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and the UN
Country team in Nepal. This is her first visit to Nepal after being
appointed as the High Commissioner in September 2008. nepalnews.com Mar 19 09
