UN rights chief meets PM, President
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay held
separate meetings with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and President Dr
Ram Baran Yadav on Friday and discussed with them the human rights
situation in Nepal.
During her meeting with PM Dahal at his Baluwatar residence, Pillay draw
his attention to the lack of progress in ending the culture of impunity
and find the whereabouts of involuntarily disappeared people, among other
things.
According to PM Dahal's press advisor Om Sharma, the PM told her that
desired progress could not be made in terms of improving the human rights
record due to transitional situation, but he expressed commitment to take
steps to improve the situation and form the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission at the earliest.
Furthermore, responding to Pillay's query whether Nepal was going to
request for renewal of the mandate of Office of the High Commissioner for
Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal), PM Dahal said the government would
take a proper decision after consulting with the political parties.
OHCHR-Nepal's term ends in June this year.
Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner also called on President Yadav at his
residence, Shital Niwas and shared views on ending the culture of impunity
in Nepal.
