NOC calls for invoking Essential Services Act
The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has requested the Home Ministry to invoke the Essential Service Services Act to ensure the smooth transportation of petroleum products from Tuesday.
Both the Nepal Petroleum Transporters Association (NPTA) and Nepal Petroleum Dealers' Association (NPDA) unilaterally ceased ferrying petroleum products from 31st March Sunday. Tanker owners have announced agitation to pressurize the NOC to revoke its decision to replace tankers more than 20 years old.
Of the total of 1,200 private tankers ferrying fuel, over 200 tankers are more than 20 years old.
The NOC, the sole state-run supplier of petroleum products in the country, had proposed phase-wise replacement of old fuel ferrying vehicles over 25 years. According to the NOC, there is no insurance coverage for such vehicles that carry 12,000 liters petrol worth Rs 1.5 million.
The NOC is also learnt to have been planning to enable Nepal Police and Armed Police Force to buy 25 oil tankers. nepalnews.com Mar 31 09
