NC to elect PP leader next week
Main opposition party Nepali Congress is preparing to elect its parliamentary party leader next week, more than a year after the Constituent Assembly elections.
Ananda Dhungana, coordinator of the PP election committee said, the PP elections will take place either on May 8 or 9. Earlier this week, the central working committee had formed an election committee to conduct the elections for PP executive committee.
The elections of the PP in NC had been delayed for a long time due to a lack of statute. The statute was endorsed in February.
The PP statute has a provision for a deputy leader of the PP for the first time. There is a provision for proportionate representation in the parliamentary working committee, which will have 12 members elected by PP members, 5 members elected from each development region and 6 members including two women nominated by the parliamentary leader.
With the deputy leader, chief whip, whip and general secretary of the party as ex-officio members, the working committee will have 27 members. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs will also be an ex-officio member at a time when the party is in the government.
Although party president Girija Prasad Koirala has claimed himself as the leader of the PP, the party has been without an elected leader ever since the elections of the CA. nepalnews.com May 01 09
