Garbage collection to resume from Tuesday

Solid waste from Kathmandu and Lalitpur that had been piling up on the streets of Kathmandu for almost a week now due to protests by locals near Sisdol landfill site will be collected from Tuesday after the government and the agitators reached a consensus Monday afternoon.

Government representatives and the agitators signed a three-point agreement on the latter's demands. As per the agreement, the government will address the demands raised by the agitators by making a master plan for the development of the area.

Agreement has also been reached on forming a taskforce to study the environmental and ecological impact in the area due to dumping of the waste and recommend suggest for its solution. Government representatives at the talks also agreed to forward the demand of establishing a hospital and providing an ambulance to the health ministry.

Residents of Kagatigoan, a hamlet on the way to Sisdol, Nuwakot had prevented containers carrying waste from Kathmandu from dumping waste in the Sisdol Landfill site. Heaps of decaying garbage had been piling up on Kathmandu streets emanating stenching odour.

Health officials have warned Kathmandu denizens of possible outbreak of diseases like diaohrea and cholera. Doctors have already complained of an increase in such cases. The problem was aggravated by the rainfall in Kathmandu.
