Highway blocked in protest of attacks

Sunwal-Parasi section of the east-west highway remained closed Saturday due to obstructions by cadres of Sher Bahadur Deuba faction of Nepali Congress against arrest of their friends.

Some cadres of Nepal Students’ Union (Democratic) - the student wing of the erstwhile Nepali Congress (Democratic) led by Deuba, were arrested in allegation of attacks against NSU central president Pradip Poudel Saturday evening.

Poudel along with some central leaders were attacked by an unidentified group Saturday evening as they were coming out of a training session. Poudel alleged that police remained mute spectators during the incident.

The gang members, who came in seven motorcycles with three persons astride each bike, began attacking his team with kicks and blows and later rained batons and other domestic weapons on them.

Poudel claimed that the cadres of Nepali Congress, who were expelled from the party on various disciplinary grounds, were responsible for the attacks. nepalnews.com May 27 09
