|Tea estate closure continuous
The tea estate in the eastern region could not resume their daily works even after a week long closure following the indefinite strike called by estate workers demanding hike in the salary and daily wages and social security guarantee.
Due to the stance of the workers, the industrial estate in Jhapa, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Terathum among others districts could not resume their operation.
Following the week-long closure of the estate, the tea farmers are also staging protest demanding the rights to sell their green tea to the factories.
As the farmers have not been able to sell their green tea to the industries due to the strike, they have stated staging protest obstructing Mechi highway by dumping their green tea in the middle of the road.
The farmers also claimed that huge amount of green tea that they collect on the daily basis is wasted as the industrialists and trade unions are failing to hold talks to resume tea estate.
Though the cooperative union has urged the district administration to address the problems of the tea estate workers, it has not been solved.
Nepal Tea Estate Workers’ Union (NTEWU), Nepal Independent Tea Estate Workers’ Union and All Nepal Tea affiliated to Nepali Congress, UCPN-Maoist and CPN-UML, respectively had jointly called the strike. nepalnews.com
