| Statute sub-committee sets August 18 deadline to complete first draft of new constitution
The sub-committee formed by the Constitutional Committee to narrow down disputes in the new constitution has set a deadline of August 18 to resolve the outstanding disputes and prepare the first draft of the new constitution.
The extended term of the Constituent Assembly is ends on August 28. A meeting of the sub-committee at Singha Durbar Thursday morning decided
complete the first draft latest by August, ten days before the CA term expires. The parties have a tentative agreement to extend the CA term
further if the first draft is prepared within the current term.
Sub-committee member Laxman Lal Karna told journalists after the meeting, the meeting has decided to expedite discussions to resolve
the outstanding disputes and complete the first draft of the new constitution by August 18.
The meeting has also decided to form three separate taskforces to deal separately with the three major disputes - form of governance, state
restructuring and electoral system.
The Constitutional Committee had extended the deadline of the five-member sub-committee headed by Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal
and comprising of representatives from Nepali Congress, UML, Madhe s-based parties and the fringe parties for an indefinite period last week. nepalnews.com
