| ‘Abducted’ US tourist returns to hotel
The US tourist who was has reportedly abducted from a hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu Sunday morning has returned to the hotel the same evening.
John Robert Schrumpf, a US national, was forcibly taken away by two men wearing combat jackets at around 2 am, Sunday from Hotel Dream Home in the tourist hub of Thamel. The men had identified themselves as Nepal Army personnel, according to the hotel staff.
Schrumpf has told the police the two men forcibly asked him to withdraw money using his ATM card and took him to Tara Casino. Police are investigation to verify his claims.
Schrumpf, who had been working as a volunteer for an NGO in Nepal, had been staying in the hotel for the past three months, hotel owner Rajendra Pokharel said.
After the hotel staff tried to prevent Schrumpf from being forcibly taken away from his room, the two men had said they were from the special narcotics cell of Nepal Army and were arresting Schrumpf to investigate his involvement in illegal drug trade.
